What is kopimi?

Kopimi (pronounced like copy me) is a request that your work is copied, shared, remixed, and enjoyed by all. It allows artists and creators to encourage their audiences to engage with their work in the most personal way: by making it their own, and sharing it with the people important to them.

Kopimi is not a copyright license. For best results, release your work under a license like Creative Commons CC0, and use a kopimi badge (see below) to encourage sharing and remixing.

Why is kopimi important?

The web is built on shared culture, with memes evolving and becoming time capsules for the zeitgeist. Kopimi, serving as an invitation to share and remix, is good for the future of the open web.

For artists and creators, kopimi invites your audience to participate in the evolution of your work. This can be transformative, with surprising new meaning added by contributors.

History of kopimi

The idea of kopimi was created by Ibrahim Botani of Piratbyrån in 2005. The goal was to promote copying, with the symbol serving to encourage copying, mixing or manipulating. Kopimi was quickly embraced by file-sharing communities as it was well-aligned to their ideologies. In 2010, following the passing of Ibrahim, Piratbyrån disbanded. Kopimi as a movement lives on.

Kopimism

Kopimism is officially recognized as a religion by the Swedish government. The Missionary Church of Kopimism believes that the search for knowledge, the circulation of knowledge, and the act of copying are sacred. You can learn more in The New Yorker's article: The First Church of Pirate Bay.
